INTERNATIONAL. The Moodie Report today announced the first-ever global Airport Food & Beverage (FAB) Conference and Awards, in association with Manchester Airport. The inaugural event is being hosted on 5–7 September by Manchester Airport at the unique Concorde Conference Centre – the most iconic airport conference facility in the world. Manchester Airport Managing Director Andrew Cornish says: “We continue to try to put the stereotypes of airport food to rest as it’s a vital part of an airport’s business."

US. Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport will issue a series of Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for key commercial concessions later this year at the new US$1.4 billion International Terminal, which is slated to open in 2012. The facility will complement the existing Terminal E, which handles international flights. The airport plans to host an open day for interested parties and potential bidders in May, and will issue the RFPs in the third quarter of 2010.

HAITI. The Moodie Report Publisher Martin Moodie has been in Haiti over recent days, together with fellow founding members of Hand in Hand for Haiti. The travel retail project, which aims to build primary school facilities in an area of great need in the earthquake-ravaged country, has raised over US$1.8 million since its launch. SPAIN. Malaga Airport is to open a new terminal on 15 March, which will include an extensive shopping offer from leading travel retailers such as Aldeasa and Áreas. The latter revealed details of its new store concepts today, saying it expects to generate sales of €55 million over the five-year concession period.

SPAIN. Passenger numbers at Spanish airports operated by AENA (Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea) enjoyed a +1.3% year-on-year increase in February. The total number of passengers recorded was 11,794,185.

UK. Leading French travel retailer Aelia is set to open a Longchamp boutique in the coming days at London Heathrow Airport Terminal 1. The 60sq m unit will offer a range of bags and other small leathergoods from the French luxury goods house.

BAHRAIN. Bahrain Duty Free has launched the latest in its popular prize draw series, offering online customers the chance to win a trip to the FIFA World Cup in South Africa later this year. The competition is open to consumers who purchase BD25 or more worth of products via the retailer's website.

SWITZERLAND. Following the success of the Soul of Chocolate exhibition staged in 2006, Zürich Airport has been showcasing its latest Chocolate Fest. Expertly executed in partnership with Confiserie Sprüngli and The Nuance Group, the topic of this year’s exhibition is 'Total Chocolate'.

CHINA. The Shanghai municipal government is planning to develop the downtown duty free business as part of its drive to enhance the city’s status as a major international centre for trade, according to local reports.

AUSTRIA. Vienna International Airport handled 1.19 million passengers in February, an increase of +5.4% year-on-year. Middle East traffic surged by +11.6% in the month, with Eastern European routes showing +5.2% growth.

US. Members of Women in Travel (WiT) raised US$1,540 for charity in a packed meeting during the IAADFS show in Orlando. Co-hosted by Beverly Walker Johansson and Lois Pasternak, the event featured a charity raffle in aid of Haitian Relief and an auction. Both the raffle and auction included generous donations from the trade.

FRANCE. “We are preparing for the future,” says Toulouse-Blagnac Airport CEO Jean-Michel Vernhes as the French regional location opens its new terminal today, raising capacity to 8.5 million passengers a year. The Nuance Group operates the travel retail contract, covering around 1,200sq m of space at the airport.

EUROPE. There are just nine days left until early registration closes – and with it the opportunity to enjoy an early booking discount – for this year’s ACI Europe Trading Conference & Exhibition, to be held in Malta on 26–28 April. The organisers say they expect 400-plus delegates at this year’s event.

AIRLINE NEWS

EUROPE. The European Lung Foundation, a lung disease charity, has composed an innovative new air travel database that can be used by airlines and travel agencies across Europe. The database contains free information about airline oxygen policies and is useful to lung disease sufferers when booking a holiday, or travel agencies who wish to provide this helpful service to their clients.

SOUTH KOREA. Ballantine’s Scotch whisky, Camus Cognac, Estée Lauder cosmetics and Chanel fragrances led Korean Air’s inflight duty free sales rankings by value for February in their respective categories. Hawaiian Sun (confectionery) and Bang & Olufsen (miscellaneous) were among the other strong performers for the Korean carrier.

INTERNATIONAL. More than 25 airlines have already signed up to attend ISPY 2010 and ISPY+, two key events in the inflight retail calendar, which take place in September. Read on for details and the latest list of registered airlines.

AUSTRALIA. The soon-to-be-completed A$500 million upgrade of Sydney Airport’s International Terminal (T1) has received strong approval ratings from passengers, according to a survey released today. The enhanced range of consumer services and retail and food & beverage are key factors, says the airport.

US. Smashbox has extended its mascara portfolio with a new product, called Hyperlash, which is said to lift, lengthen, volumise and define lashes. It will begin rolling out internationally from April. Also new is the anti-ageing Halo Hydrating Perfecting Bronzer.

FRANCE. Parfums Christian Dior has updated its fragrance, make-up and skincare portfolios with a number of new launches, which begin rolling out from this month. Novelties include an edt version of Miss Dior Chérie, the Addict Ultra-Gloss, an extension to the brand’s Dior Prestige White Collection, and several new travel retail exclusive sets.

FRANCE. BPI (Beauté Prestige International) has updated its For Her and Essence lines from designer Narciso Rodriguez for spring with limited-edition scents and beauty palettes. The latter includes blusher and scented lip balm.

FRANCE. Guerlain has unveiled a new mascara, called Le 2 De Guerlain Volume. As its name suggests, the product is said to deliver volume to lashes, underscored by an intense vinyl finish, courtesy of two different applicator brushes. The brand has also updated its signature Météorites franchise with a new collection, called Météorites Perles Illuminating Powder.

ITALY. Italian company ITF has unveiled a new fragrance line from Canadian design duo Dsquared². The Dsquared² “Nature always wins” Supercollection – comprising two scents that celebrate the beauty of wood – are rolling out this month.

INTERNATIONAL. Bobbi Brown has created a new travel retail exclusive set, featuring its Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner, in shades Black Ink and Black Mauve Shimmer Ink. The brand has also unveiled the new Natural Finish Long Lasting Foundation SPF15, which will go on-counter in April.

FINLAND. Finnish fur design company Rosafox has embarked on a travel retail expansion expedition following successful showings at last year's TFWA World Exhibition and Middle East Exclusive fair. Since 1992, Rosafox has built up an international reputation for its fashion accessories made from Finnish blue fox fur.

FRANCE. Clarins Group and designer Thierry Mugler have invited women of the world to connect and communicate through the website www.womanity.com. The site is described as an interactive platform designed to spark creative exchange among women. It will also be used to develop future Mugler/Clarins Group beauty products.

UAE. AMP Trading presented a variety of products across its varied portfolio at last month’s Middle East Exclusive event in Dubai. Among these was the innovative sWaP (smart watch and phone) device, the wireless Motor Mouse and the Imola Limited Edition watch from Lambretta.

AUSTRIA. Vienna International Airport handled 1.19 million passengers in February, an increase of +5.4% year-on-year. Middle East traffic surged by +11.6% in the month, with Eastern European routes showing +5.2% growth.

DENMARK. Passenger numbers at Copenhagen Airport climbed by +10.4% year-on-year in February to 1,443,453, marking the fourth consecutive month of growth. The combined increase in passenger volumes for January and February was +8%.

EUROPE. Passenger traffic at Europe’s airports grew by +3.9% year-on-year in January, Airports Council International (ACI) Europe has reported. But the figures remain well below January 2008 levels amid a sluggish economic recovery in the region.

UK. Passenger traffic at BAA’s UK airports grew by +2.4% year-on-year in February to 7.13 million. North Atlantic traffic was up by +2.7% while other long-haul sectors rose by +4%, driven by strong performances from China, Middle East and Latin America.

GERMANY/INTERNATIONAL. Frankfurt Airport’s strong start to February in passenger numbers was offset by the impact of a pilots’ strike and Hurricane Xynthia later in the month, contributing to a -1.0% year-on-year fall in traffic. But across all parent company Fraport’s airports passenger traffic rose by +3%, buoyed by outstanding performances in Antalya, Turkey and Lima, Peru.

SWEDEN. Passenger traffic at Sweden’s major airports – managed by LFV Group – climbed by +5% year-on-year in February. International passenger numbers rose by +3% and domestic traffic volumes increased by +7%.
