Final maturation in aged rum casks has given The Balvenie GoldenCask an added sweetness and subtle spiciness

SCOTLAND. The Balvenie Distillery has released a new, non chill-filtered single malt whisky, The Balvenie GoldenCask 14 Year Old, exclusively in travel retail.
Produced by William Grant & Sons, it will be available in travel retail worldwide from February 2009 with a recommended retail price of £40 (or local equivalent).
Presented in the traditional Balvenie tube, with an abv of 47.5%, the introduction will be supported by experiential promotions and tastings in airports.
William Grant & Sons Global Travel Retail Director Rita Greenwood said: “We’re very proud of this travel retail exclusive, which will offer malt whisky enthusiasts a very special new taste and will perfectly complement our award-winning range of The Balvenie Single Malt Scotch whiskies in travel retail.”
Crafted by The Balvenie Malt Master David Stewart, The Balvenie GoldenCask 14 Year Old was matured first in traditional oak whisky casks before spending a final period of maturation in rum casks.
Stewart commented: “The result of this unusual finishing period in rum casks has created an interesting new Balvenie expression with a fruity sweetness and subtle spice that I hope malt whisky enthusiasts will enjoy.”
Greenwood has high hopes for the new line, first shown to travel retail buyers at the TFWA World Exhibition last year. “Despite economic uncertainty, the industry clearly continues to believe that the future lies in offering travellers something special," she said.
