JAPAN. The Japanese Government today intervened to weaken the Yen against the US Dollar in order to protect economic growth. That currency relationship is a key driver of Japanese spending in travel retail.The Yen's surge in recent months to around ¥77 to the Dollar earlier this week, has been a major factor in Japanese travel retail spending holding up well, despite lower passenger numbers in the wake of March’s earthquake and tsunami. But analysts said the impact of intervention is likely to be limited.

EUROPE. It's showdown time in Brussels today as MasterCard contests a landmark European Commission decision over the disputed Multilateral Interchange Fee (MIF) at the European Court in Luxembourg. At issue is whether the Commission was right to prohibit the application of this fee back in December 2007. According to FPA partner, EuroCommerce, the unseen cost of the MIF puts a €12 billion per year burden on retailers and inflates prices for all European consumers.

Yen strength buoys Japanese outbound market; DFS posts big gains in high-end sales

JAPAN. Travel retailers targeting Japanese travellers around the world are benefiting from the continued strength of the Yen against the US Dollar. DFS Chairman and CEO Ed Brennan told The Moodie Report: “Yen spending in our core Japanese markets has increased better than 10 points since the Yen’s strengthening to 85. Big ticket items such as watches and jewellery are seeing sales trends which are double other categories."
