THE NETHERLANDS. Schiphol Group yesterday posted a +14.3% year-on-year rise in first-half revenues to €157.2 million at its Consumers division. The increase outstripped passenger growth, largely due to the chocolate concession being brought in-house. But airside retail spend per passenger was down.

MEXICO. Airports operator ASUR yesterday posted a sharp +10.5% rise in commercial revenues for the second quarter. This was driven by higher traffic (+2.9%) but mainly by a commendable +8.3% gain in commercial revenue per passenger to MXN66.22 (US$5.70). In related news, ASUR Chief Executive Adolfo Castro said that the company is unlikely to bid for airport concessions in Brazil, citing weak returns.

EUROPE. It's showdown time in Brussels today as MasterCard contests a landmark European Commission decision over the disputed Multilateral Interchange Fee (MIF) at the European Court in Luxembourg. At issue is whether the Commission was right to prohibit the application of this fee back in December 2007. According to FPA partner, EuroCommerce, the unseen cost of the MIF puts a €12 billion per year burden on retailers and inflates prices for all European consumers.

Aeropuerto Internacional de la Ciudad de Mexico is offering a renewed period of rent relief for concessionaires in Terminal 1 of Mexico City International Airport to compensate for the continued decline in traffic resulting from the bankruptcy of Mexicana. UK. American Express Global Foreign Exchange Services has won an exclusive seven-year foreign exchange contract at Birmingham Airport, the UK's second-largest airport outside London. The first set of bureaux opens on 1 August and the remaining units will open by the start of next year. The company says the move underlines its ambitious expansion plans at airports worldwide.

GERMANY. Frankfurt Airport’s new Pier A-Plus, which opens next year, will house a broad array of local, national and international brand names, according to airport operator Fraport. Fashion brand Mulberry will open its first store in Germany at the new pier, and Hermès, Montblanc and Porsche Design will also have boutiques. Leading German names Wempe (jewellery) and Engelhorn (fashion) will also feature. There will be a diverse mix of food & beverage too.

GERMANY. A strong performance from the Retail & Real Estate division buoyed Fraport Group in Q1 2011, with revenues rising +12.8% to €102.5 million. The key performance indicator of net retail revenue per passenger also posted a strong increase, up +8.1% to €3.32. The news came as Fraport confirmed an extension to Gebr Heinemann’s main travel retail contract at Frankfurt Airport until 2021, as it plans its next wave of major commercial openings.

Currency specialist Moneycorp, in partnership with airport media specialist EYE, launched what it described as its largest ever retail marketing campaign at the North and South terminals of London Gatwick Airport during April. The campaign coincided with the start of the spring bank holiday period and the anticipated exodus of UK holidaymakers, and will run until 8 May.

Frankfurt Airport owner Fraport Group has reported a surge of +11.2% year-on-year in its Retail & Real Estate revenues, to €403.1 million, as it announced its preliminary annual results for 2010. Crucially, retail revenue per passenger exceeded €3.00 for the first time, hitting €3.02 (up by +5.6%). DENMARK. Copenhagen Airports’ Shopping Centre revenue climbed by +6.3% year-on-year to DKK544.8 million (US$100 million) in 2010, the company has announced. Duty free revenue in the year increased +13.5%, benefitting from strong traffic growth and a positive change in the EU versus non-EU passenger mix.
